    Default Second car suggestions required

Due to pending redundancy I am moving jobs, and my commute is changing from about 28 miles to about 60.

This means that the impreza will no longer be the commute car, and I'm looking for suggestions for something really cheap that I can use to commute. Obviously must be diesel.

I was thinking of a budget of 2k max, so something along the lines of an old golf, or a 306 d-turbo ....

    Any suggestions?

can recommend the old shape leon - I have a 1.9Tdi (90) with 144,000 on the clock and no plans to change it anytime soon. Should be well within your budget.

You could get a 99/00 turbo diesel Nissan Primera or Toyota Avensis for under £1000 which will be guaranteed to give hassle free motoring and wouldnt cost much to run either

I wouldnt dismiss a cheap petrol car either though for a runaround....i bought my 1995 petrol Toyota Carina E a year and a half ago for £450 and the only thing i have had to do to get it through the last two MOT's was tighten the handbrake and set the lights....its a1.6 petrol and costs very little to run, and £30 will give it a full service with plugs etc, so not bad considering it only cost me £450 to start with

Hard to beat the jap scr4p for simple, trouble-free motoring IMO.

Not sure about a Primera or Avensis - I need a car I can like to own, and I can't see me liking them.

I had a look at a 1999 golf GT TDI (110) today, and it looked not to bad, bit rough on the bodywork, but it might be the kind of thing I'm looking for.

110 seems rubbish when you're used to 210 though

The Mark 4 golfs are quite a good car and if looked after dont really give much trouble.

A remap will release a good bit more power and make them feel good and lively, but to be fair, most of the turbo diesel mark 4's are fairly nippy for a standard car as it is so doubt you will be that dissappointed

And at least when you have a cheap runaround and drive about in it all week it makes getting into the scoob at the weekend much more worthwhile
