    Default Sti Engine rebuild

Well .. after some brainfailure on my end (dont ask ...) #2 Piston decided to develop a couple of cracks .. I guess a tiny wee bit of detonation could be the reason...

While Ali was giving the block functionality back he was so kind to take a couple of pics which I'd like to share with you guys.

    something is missing

Stock JDM turbo (need this replaced before Sep!)

    Half a head :P

#2 Piston, looks better in the picture than in reality (lots of cracks)

    Cliffs of Moher?

Half a block The bearings look good to me, but I leave the judgement to the experts :P

    Crank & Stock STi pistons

    Decked, pinned and honed

    The new internals

Ali: "less than half a gram difference in weight between all 4"

    ARP Studs

    Reado to go in

I now have 03 JDM Sti Conrods for sale and am open for suggestions on turbo that runs 450 BHP

Nice pics Lovely to see a professional quality engine builder at work That block machining is just sublime! Looks like there was a bit of water mixing with your oil Gerd, was there a head gasket failure in there somewhere too?

    Gotta love those new internals

How it runs now is just unbelievable, its like using a huge waterslide but with oil instead of water, weeeee

@ Shak I have no idea but Ali did not mention any head leakage, might be from taken the block apart

Stu I almost got a "free kitten with every engine rebuild", Kitten thought the drivers side foot area is a nice place for a nap
Thanks for those turbo links! I think I will try and safe up for the Litchfield, looking at prices that wont happen in 2011, but 2012 is also a nice year for more horsies If it fits my days off or if I know early enough to humbly ask for vacation I will swing by in Sep as the map is very much on the top do list.

I was lucky I guess, this fell apart on its own that way, was just held together by the inner cylinderwall

Funny enough my landlord came by today, he is about 60 I recon and is quite interested in that blue car in the lot
He asked again who the rebuilder was as I was mentioning something about rebuild in NI a couple of weeks earlier, when I mentioned Ali Burrows he was like "yeah I talked to some friends who work on cars here, and they heard only the best of him"

Nice to see Ali's good reputation going as far down as here too, was worth every cent invested!

i love reading threads like this, open engines and shiny new stuff always gets my blood flowing.
is that kind of piston failure common with scoobys? ive seen pistons fail like that on a few boosted b16s before, they were held together like that with the cylinder wall and a bit of good luck.

Broken ringlands can be a problem on EJ motors Colm. The 2.5 is very prone to it.

A bad tune on the car will just excellerate the issue, hence the Hatchbacks were recalled for reflash as IM decided it was the map and piston design causing the issue.

ah ok, Thanks for that bit of info Stu. I had heard the 2.5s were stronger than the 2.0s but not from great sources to be fair. Not really a nice place for a design weakness
