London’s fastest rally driver Harry Hunt faces a race against time to make it to the final round of the World Rally Championship in time.
Hunt, 23, was competing on the Intercontinental Rally Challenge finale in Cyprus yesterday, but has to start his preparations for the final round of the WRC in north Wales tomorrow (Monday) morning. Hunt has already won the 2011 FIA Production Car Cup for Drivers of 2WD Cars, but he is aiming to end his season on a high on Wales Rally GB – especially after a tough time on the Cyprus Rally.
Once again, Hunt and co-driver Robbie Durant were among the pace-setters in their category and regularly posting fastest times, but Hunt’s hopes of closing the IRC season out with a win were dashed by a damaged rear beam on his Citroen DS3 R3.
Well in contention through the first day of the Paphos-based event, Hunt hit trouble on the rally’s eighth stage.
“We got to the end of the first stage [on Saturday morning] and didn’t really notice anything, but the rear beam had been bent slightly,” Hunt said. “The next stage wasn’t too bad because it was all Tarmac and I was faster than [category rival, Stefano] Albertini. But, 12 kilometres into the next stage – even though I was only driving at 40 per cent because of the problem – the right-rear hub ripped away from the rear beam. The stages had been really rough and we think there was a small crack yesterday, which got bigger and bigger. It’s disappointing, but now we look towards Rally GB and a finish.
“We’re landing at midnight tonight [Saturday], washing everything overnight and then heading up to Llandudno for the start of the recce for Rally GB. It’s going to be interesting!”
