There might not have been any rain today but the Rally Queens still experienced a mixture of conditions during the longest day of the 2011 East African Classic Safari Rally. The Kenya Airways Ford Escort Mk1 handled everything from rough and rocky to high speed straights with aplomb and the biggest drama was Samira suffering from a small amount of discomfort at the end of the longest section of the rally!
The opening stage was a mammoth 154.44 kilometres which was primarily rather rough. Samira and Anita passed a number of stricken cars, only to be later caught by one which gave them quite a fright. Despite that they were very happy with another top thirty stage time. Next up was the Mbulu Escarpment which Samira absolutely loved. A half spin at a hairpin after being distracted by a mooning spectator was the only drama. The third test was a flat out run towards Ngorongoro Crater and although Samira commented that she was preserving the car she still hit the rev limiter in top gear on one straight!
Samira was as happy as ever at end of day service; another really good day. I didn’t really like the first stage as it was quite rough and at the end I had a sore bum! The Mbulu Hills were really beautiful and it was a real driver’s stage… I had a lot of fun there! I’m still lacking a bit of confidence in the fast sections and so dropped a little bit of time in the last section but all in all it’s been another fun day.
Day 4 sees the surviving crews head back to Kenya and on to Amboseli. Three stages, one in Tanzania and a further two in Kenya, make up the day’s action. Based on the recent wet weather the first section could be very tricky as it consists of copious amounts of thick volcanic sand which, when wet, makes the going very difficult. Crews need to be alert through the two stages in Kenya as they are on the border of Amboseli National Park and plenty of wildlife wanders the area.
