After watching and testing 12 Junior 1000 drivers over the past 8 months, Knockhill have announced the winners of their prize for “Best Pupil”. But the choice of a winner proved so difficult that the decision was taken to increase the original prize of 2 “1-2-1 Junior Performance Driving Courses” to 3. The prizes have gone to Alex Adams (15) from Kilbarchan, Renfrew; Michael ****ie (14) from Banchory and Harry Marchbank (15) from Thornhill, Dumfries. Bob Watson, BARS instructor at Knockhill said “It has been so rewarding to work with the young drivers and to see them develop so quickly. They are a credit to their families and will surprise many of the senior drivers when they finally get into the forests”
And right on the back of this, the MSA Academy are working with the experienced co-drivers who have volunteered to sit with the young drivers and the organisers of the Brick & Steel Junior 1000 Ecosse Challenge to set out some practical training exercises that the Junior 1000 drivers can practice before their next event. The exercises are designed to help drivers develop their driving techniques to make them safer, more confident and quicker.
In the meantime, work goes on to spread the word about this amazing rally driving experience for 14 to 17 year olds. The Junior 1000 “roadshow” will be at several motoring events during 2012 and will be talking to young people and their parents. The “roadshow” will be present at the start and finish venue for the Coltel Granite City Rally on 13th and 14th April. The venue is Thainstone Agricultural Centre near Inverurie. Championship Co-ordinator David Barlow commented “We were very active with promo work last year but a number of youngsters and their families must have wondered about what this “bald, bearded Scotsman” was telling them about this fantastic new opportunity. But for 2012 my job will be so much easier because I will have the support of some real live young drivers who have been there, are doing it and have got the hat!!!” So come along to the Brick & Steel Ecosse Challenge van and have a chat with David Barlow, Mikey ****ie, Scott Murray and their parents.
The next event for the Junior 1000 Ecosse Challenge will be at Ingliston Showground near Edinburgh on 5th May. A total of 12 Junior crews are expected.
