Britain’s Harry Hunt finished third in class following a strong performance on the Tour de Corse, the fourth round of the Intercontinental Rally Challenge. The result marks Harry’s second consecutive podium finish after the Londoner also claimed third in class on Italy’s Mille Miglia Rally last month.
Renowned as one of the toughest rallies on the IRC calendar, this year’s Tour de Corse challenged a healthy field of 19 drivers in the highly competitve two-wheel-drive category. With stiff competition from drivers including the highly-experienced Francois Delecour (a former winner in Corsica), Harry and co-driver Robbie Durant battled against a series of setbacks in their Citroen DS3 R3T to claim their first IRC podium of 2012.
“It’s been an eventful and tiring rally, but I’ve had a brilliant weekend,” said 23-year-old Harry. “The stages in Corsica are very demanding and the temperatures have been unusually hot for this time of year, especially on Saturday when there wasn’t much time for a break between the stages to cool down. We really enjoyed the new stages on Saturday though, the roads in Corsica have an incredible amount of grip and we were able to get into a good rhythm.”
This year’s Tour de Corse kicked off in Ajaccio on Thursday afternoon but Harry lost time on the day’s closing stage due to problems with his car’s fuel pump. The former IRC 2WD Cup champion then suffered a further setback after incurring a front-right puncture 500 metres into Friday’s opening stage.
“We hit a rock at the start of the first stage on Friday, and we lost quite a bit of time,” explained Harry. “I just didn’t see it, but I think it was at the same spot that Marty McCormack also got his double puncture. Then we lost time on the next stage when we got caught behind the car in front and couldn’t overtake.”
Harry added: “Saturday was mostly trouble-free: we needed to try and catch the Citroen DS3 in front, and we were clawing back about one second each kilometre so we were doing a good job. But after they crashed out on Stage 13, the pressure was off so we just drove at a consistent pace and enjoyed ourselves.”
Harry will now return to London to prepare for the fifth round of the IRC, the Targa Florio-Rally Internazionale Di Sicilia (14–16 June).
