Default Help! Something's gone wrong with my steering :(

I was turning right tonight when my steering suddenly felt heavy. When parking the car a few mins later, it felt like I didn't have any power steering and the steering wheel appeared to shudder when turned :/ There also appeared to be steam/smoke coming from under the bonnet... THe car's parked at my daughters and I really don't want to leave it here overnight. Does anyone have any idea what's wrong and what I need to do to fix it? Do you reckon it's safe enough to drive home (3 miles). :'(

Sounds like you have a split in the power steering lines and lost the power steering the smoke is the power steering fluid
heating up from contact with the engine, don't drive it Irene risk it might ignite

check it is fluid leaking clean it up best you can i'd say you would be ok for a 3 mile drive.

    Did you check the fluid?

Just what's been said also if it's out of fluid you can wreck the pump if you drive it with no fluid

I actually dreamt this week that my engine was on fire! I'll not risk driving it just incase. I'll ring breakdown recoverand get it brought home. Not a great start to the year Thank you for the advice. Glad I was able to check with you.

All sorted! RAC came out and discovered the problem was caused by too much water around my engine. Didn't suspect the radiator cos it's fairly new and appeared in good condition. However, after scrutinising the engine and checking everywhere to see where all the water was coming from, it turned out that the problem was caused by a stray bolt that had been dropped down behind the radiator, and months of vibration had worn a hole in the bottom of the radiator :/ At least I know what the problem is now. There goes my dream of getting that new sharkfin carbon fibre roof spoiler.

Bummer Irene, hopefully you will be able to get it fixed. If you don't already know of somebody to fix the radiator for you, would be worth phoning Brownlow Radiators in Lurgan as thy specialise in that sort of work.

Thanks Andy. Mark, the water was getting round the fan belt and causing problems running the parts that assist the steering. There wasn't any problem with the fluid after all.
